It’s early spring and the weather is perfect. A great time to check out Stone Mountain State Park in North Carolina. The park is just off the Blue Ridge Parkway about 10 miles from Sparta right up Highway 21.
This weekend it is beautiful and the sun is shining. It is going to be a great weekend. I invited my sister along so we could spend so quality time together. After arriving and setting up camp, it was time to see some of the sights. A quick hike brought us to one of the larger falls and then a trip up the mountain to see the park’s namesake. The mountain looks imposing from the base and you can see hikers that have braved the top trail. This day however was not to be the one that the summit trail was to be tackled. My sister has some issues with walking too far so it was decided that the campsite would be a restful respite from the gathering heat. When we got back to the site, we played cards and just enjoyed the quietness of the campground. There were only a few people there at that time. Others did join us later in the day, a family beside us on the left, a group of college kids across from us and another family in an RV down the road. Other than those folks, the park was rather empty where we were at. As the sun began to set, a fire was started and more restful conversation. Time flies when you are relaxed and the evening ended with droopy eyes.
When the next morning came, it was time to retrace our steps. More hikes, more falls, more good food and especially good conversation. I look forward to camping with my sister again….
